Swimsuit Season

Swimsuit Season is an ongoing project which invites women-identifying individuals to be photographed in their favorite swimsuits, surrounded by items that bring them joy. Often viewed as the most body-revealing garment, the swimsuit becomes a symbol of vulnerability, self-acceptance, and quiet defiance. There’s no pressure for the subject to pose, perform, or prepare. It's simply an open invitation to show up 'as you are' and experiment in front of the camera.

Photographs, often tinged with body hair, double chins, and a high-pass preset (that enhances skin texture), serve as way to investigate societal complexities, femininity, and women's relationship with online culture and self-perception. All participants volunteer through social media, further grounding the work relevant in this modern time period where women are continuously perceived and idealized online.

McQuown's use of studio lighting adds an additional layer of complexity to this work. Conventional swimsuit photography caters to the male gaze and consumerism. McQuown rebels against consumerism and the patriarchal norms placed on women by seeking out real, everyday women and placing them in a space they were told they do not belong, the commercial studio setting. McQuown's intent for self-awareness and play, rather than desirability reclaims the studio setting as a safe space for women to exist and experience liberation.

In the spirit of solidarity and shared vulnerability, McQuown wears her swimsuit too, turning each session into a celebration of presence, self-expression, and the courage to take up space unapologetically. McQuown has currently photographed five volunteers and hopes to continue this project over the course of her life.

This project is based in Cincinnati, Ohio.
