Mundane Not Mundane, 2018-2020
An ongoing series repurposing iPhone selfies and mundane moments. This work references Roland Barthes' theory of semiotics in speaking about connotative and denotative messages. The goal of this work is to use impulsively hoarded photographs that lack a strong connotative message and attempt to strengthen the message and lost feeling through a new portrayal. It is an ongoing experiment to push the capability of aesthetics and mark-making to strengthen connotations. In-turn, the drawings become photographs in themselves. Ultimately, this work explores the lost purpose of imagery and attempts to make sense of its role in the present.
